I will live forever

Eye Bank

  • India has about 2 million persons suffering from Corneal Blindness. Current levels of eye donations are around 25,000 per annum. Simple arithmetic shows that waiting period of 100 years may not be sufficient to eliminate the waitlist. Further, North India in general and Haryana in particular are lagging way behind other regions in the nation in eye donation.

  • We have taken this initiative and started off by establishing ‘Y P MahindruNiramaya Eye Bank’, Gurgaon, only Eye Bank in South Haryana, duly approved by state authorities, for Cornea Retrieval, Processing and Transplant.

  • We launched a campaign ‘NetraDaanChetnaAbhiyaan’ on 16-01-2005 by inviting about 200 leading opinion makers of Gurgaon for a seminar on the issue. Active media support ensured that the campaign got off with high visibility.

  • We have kept up the campaign since then. This has ensured significant increase in awareness levels. We have managed to get eye donations since then. We have carried out about 421 free corneal transplants at Gurgaon. The rest of corneas have been transplanted by AIIMS, Delhi, and PGIMS, Rohtak (Haryana) through an ongoing tie-up.

  • We are taking care to keep this campaign alive by highlighting every eye donation in Press and Media to ensure that gradually this becomes a part of the Gurgaon culture in years to come.
